Urban Gardening

My husband and I started our first garden in April 2017 when we were renting a place with a small backyard in Alameda, California.

Here’s what we did:

  • The first step was getting rid of all the weeds. And there were a lot! I did this for hours, often with my then one year old son who was still small enough that I had to keep an eye on him to make sure he didn’t eat any rocks!

2019 Urban Homesteading Goals

Part of urban homesteading is preserving your own food, growing your own herbs and vegetables and creating as much self-sufficiency as possible. While my ketchup still uses ingredients I buy at the store or online, making my own is ultimately cheaper than store-bought ketchup (I’m paying for the ingredients but not the labor of processing those ingredients into ketchup, that’s just my own time) and is much more nutritious. Foraging Acorns!

I love growing my own vegetables because it’s such a rewarding experience, but also because it saves money. Finding food on the ground that just falls from the sky? Even better!
There is an abundance of Oak Trees in Santa Cruz county. Randomly, I found most of my acorns in my Los Gatos doctor’s office parking lot!
